NHS to Pay for Removal of PIP Breast Implants

The NHS will be paying for the surgeries to remove breast implants of nearly 1.000 women who had been fitted with Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) silicon implants which have been found to rupture or cause swellings.

According to Department of Health (DoH), around 607 women who had undergone cosmetic surgeries at private clinics have decided to remove their implants, with 384 of the women already having removed their implants.

Another 378 women who were operated on by the NHS will also be removing their implants.

In total, nearly 7,800 women have contacted the NHS with a view to remove their implants if they are found defective. The consultations and scans have cost the NHS around �850,000 and the bill is expected to rise by an additional �901,000 when all of the 607 women undergo surgeries.
