NHS Coughing Up Huge Amounts on Painkillers
A recent health statistic has shown that GPs are going overboard in prescribing over-the-counter painkillers to patients, leading to an expenditure of more than 440m a year on painkillers by the NHS.
The analysis has pointed out that PCTs are spending thousands on over-the-counter painkillers as well as cold and flu treatments such as Lemsip, Beechams, Anadin and Panadol prescribed to patients.
Nearly 3,000 on prescriptions for cold and flu have been spent between January and June, and more than 59,000 on over-the-counter painkillers.
