Link Between PMS and Mood Swings in Women Questioned in New Research

by Kathy Jones on October 18, 2012 at 6:02 PM

A group of Canadian researchers has rejected the widely held notion that pre-menstrual syndrome is responsible for the bad mood of women at certain times of the month.

According to the report, published in the journal Gender Medicine, researchers from University of Toronto meta analyzed more than 47 studies and found that just over 15 percent of the negative moods can be attributed pre-menstrual tension (PMT).

The researchers added that the menstrual cycle has always been targeted with myth and misinformation.

"I think this can be seen as the modern day equivalent of the old wandering womb notion - that women are hysterical because of their reproductive system. And when a woman's upset, it's still often one of the first thoughts people have - maybe she's premenstrual, rather than ‘is her physical health bad? Is she under a lot of stress? Is she lacking social support?'", lead researcher Dr Sarah Romans said.
