by Savitha C Muppala on July 6, 2011 at 9:10 PM

New research has revealed the ineffectiveness of the phonics method of teaching as compared to the whole language method of teaching children to read.

According to researchers, phonics may be good only during the initial weeks when children begin school.

The study drew a comparison between six-year-olds in New Zealand and their peers in Scotland, where phonics method is the order of the day.

The study revealed that Scottish children were slow readers and experienced difficulty in reading made-up words.
