Synesthesia May Explain Healers Claims of Seeing People's 'Aura'

Over the years, auric healing practitioners have suffered serious criticism and revolt from the skeptics, due to their extraordinary claims including seeing halos around some people.

Synesthesia, found in 1 out of every 1000 people, is a neuropsychological phenomenon wherein the brain regions responsible for processing different type of sensory stimuli are largely interconnected. This phenomenon actually causes a person to associate people to a particular color, or even taste a sound or feel a smell.

In such individuals, there is an intense cross wiring of brain synapses that cause them to effectively establish inter-connections that are not normally experienced in common people.

Scientists presume that it may be this neuropsychological factor that may have been contributing to the ability of auric healers to view auras (specific colored light) around an individual. It may even be the reason why healers are able to possess high empathy (ability to feel what others feel) and experience pain inflicted on another person.

Researchers at the University of Granada revealed the prevalence of synesthesia among some auric healing practitioners and those into esoteric forms of healing. They carried out this research by interviewing some synesthetes including a well-known healer from Granada called Esteban Casas. Most people claimed that Esteban possessed paranormal powers, whereas the researchers quietly and mutually agreed that this was a clear case of synesthesia.

This is the first time that science has been able to provide a clear explanation for an esoteric phenomenon. More such studies in the future may help us uncover the secrets behind other paranormal occurrences such as remote viewing, the existence of the human soul and even ghosts.
