Genetic Mysteries of the Neem Decoded

A Bangalore-based laboratory has announced that it has completed the genetic sequencing of neem and revealed that it will be posting all the details on its public portal.

Ganit Labs, which was formed through a PPP between the Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology and bio-informatics firm Strand Life Sciences, conducted the sequencing with the head of the laboratory, Dr Binay Panada expressing hope that this will provide a fresh impetus for entrepreneurs and students alike to study the plant.

"Neem oil and its derivatives support multiple cottage industries in India and are significant contributors to our bio-economy. We believe that our current sequencing study on neem will provide the right scientific impetus for students and young scientists to study one of the most important plant species of our country", he said.
