Diabetes Drug Actos Under Review

Recent reports about the risk of bladder cancer with the diabetes drug pioglitazone, has raised concern and Health Canada is reviewing the status of the drug.

Pioglitazone, which is marketed in Canada under the brand name Actos as well as in generic forms, is prescribed both ways- in combination with other diabetes drugs or exclusively, especially when lifestyle changes like diet and exercise have done little to control blood sugar.

The federal department has confirmed that the safety of this drug is being monitored. Health Canada said that the advantages of consuming pioglitazone is much more than the perceived risks .
