Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease Become More Prevalent in the World: ADI

Dementia is a loss of mental skills that affects your daily life and Alzheimer's accounts for 60% to 70% cases of dementia.

Latest figures from Alzheimer's Disease International show that Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease are becoming more prevalent in the world.

Researchers at the organization said around 47 million people live with dementia in the world now: that's up from 35 million in 2009.

Researchers also said without a medical breakthrough, that number is likely to double every 20 years.

The Alzheimer's Association of Western Massachusetts is helping to raise money to develop a cure for the research. Program coordinator Vanessa Martinez told 22News that the disease isn't just causing families heartache: it's costing them a huge amount of money.

"It's 226 billion that it costs the U.S. to try to help people with Alzheimer's now, so by 2050, it's going to go up by $1.1 trillion, so I think that's another reason to participate," Martinez said.

Martinez also said that through their annual Alzheimer's walk in Holyoke in in Hampden County, Massachusetts, they can provide services for people with Alzheimer's, as well as contribute money to help researchers find a cure.
