Child's IQ Linked With Mother's High Blood Pressure During Pregnancy

by Savitha C Muppala on October 5, 2012 at 7:53 AM

High blood pressure during pregnancy can impact the child's intelligence negatively, according to a new research.

A research conducted on male offspring found that, those born to mothers who had high blood pressure in pregnancy, had inadequate mental skills as compared to children born to healthy mothers.

"High blood pressure and related conditions such as preeclampsia complicate about 10 percent of all pregnancies and can affect a baby's environment in the womb. Our study suggests that even declines in thinking abilities in old age could have originated during the prenatal period when the majority of the development of brain structure and function occurs," researchers said.
