Being Always Polite is Not Such a Good Habit!

by Kathy Jones on October 13, 2011 at 8:26 PM

People who are always polite in tough situations may be going about it in the wrong way after a new research published in journal Current Directions In Psychological Science suggests that being polite in emergencies or in intense situations could have disastrous consequences.

Psychologists suggested that being polite and evasive in situations, such as a doctor helping a patient decide on whether he should have surgery or not, could lead to confused feelings in the other party and could instead hurt their feelings.

Says Jean-Francois Bonnefon, of the University of Toulouse in France, "Politeness can become problematic when it causes us to sacrifice clarity. This confusion is especially likely to occur in high-stakes situations, the very situations in which we are most likely to use politeness strategies."
