What Causes Wrinkles

Causes

1. Exposure to Ultraviolet Rays:

Exposure to the harmful rays of the sun disintegrates the supportive collagen tissue (collagen and elastin) which provides support and strength to the skin. This results in sagging of the skin and wrinkle formation.

2. Smoking:

Excessive smoking is also known to accelerate the aging process and wrinkle formation. It is believed that smoking adversely affects the blood supply to the skin.

3. Aging:

As you grow old, your skin becomes less elastic and more fragile. There is decreased production of sebum and the skin becomes dry and wrinkled. There is also a significant loss of the subcutaneous fat.

4. Inadequate Hydration:

Dehydration can contribute to wrinkling of the skin, where the skin appears puckered due to loss of water.

5. Gender:

Women develop more wrinkles around the mouth as compared to their male counterparts. This is not because they generally talk more than men but due to the fact that women have less sweat and sebum-secreting glands around the mouth area. This means less lubrication of the skin making it more prone to wrinkle formation. It has also been noticed that the number of blood vessels supplying this region is less as compared to men.

6. Effect of Cortisol:

Cortisol is a hormone that is produced in the body during stress. It is known to accelerate the degeneration of collagen . The strength and tensile property of the skin is maintained by collagen and with the degradation of collagen, wrinkles are an obvious outcome.

7. Inadequate Nutrition:

Poor and inadequate nutrition is an important contributory factor for wrinkle formation. Poor nutrition expedites the aging process and appearance of wrinkles.
