HIV Prevention: Equality Now Urges India to Criminalize Buying of Sex

by Rajshri on Jun 4 2008 2:56 PM

Global rights watchdog Equality Now has urged India to criminalize buying of sex in order to control the spread of HIV/AIDS.

The organization said changes must be made to 1956 Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act (ITPA), which would not hurt prostitutes, but would hit the pimps and brothel owners hard.

Equality Now said women into prostitution were unable to negotiate use of condoms and hence unable to protect themselves from contracting HIV/AIDS.
