The occupation is ranked in the top 22 of U.S. News & World Report's "100 Best Jobs of 2014," and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2014-15 Edition, forecasts employment of medical laboratory technicians will grow 22 percent through 2022 – much faster than the average for all occupations. The BLS expects an increase in the aging population will lead to a greater need to diagnose medical conditions, such as cancer or type 2 diabetes, through laboratory procedures.
Opportunities for medical laboratory technicians also likely will continue expanding as healthcare technology advances and affordable healthcare becomes more readily available to residents, leading to increased need for health professionals.
