Vitamin Study Sheds Light on New Trend.

NEW YORK, May 2, 2016 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- A new study about older people and drug interactions appears to shed light on several mysterious problems that face older patients. Dr. Pankaj Naram notes that researchers concluded many people do not know about drug interactions that might cause them physical problems or even pose a danger to their health.

According to the study, more than 1/3 of Americans between age of 62 and 85 in their sample were taking 5 or more prescription medications. And while access to medications is increasing, information about the negative side-effects and interaction effects is not. This is not only for the possible drug interactions between prescribed medicines, but also includes over-the-counter drugs, vitamins and supplements. This unfortunate state of affairs seems to be the result of a lack of education on the part of pharmacists and patients.

Dr. Pankaj Naram notes that the study offers an inside look at the possible problems that can crop up when patients take medicine without knowing what it does or why it is being prescribed. In fact, many millions of older people in both the U.S. and Europe take vitamin supplements along with their prescription medication. The study notes that problems can occur when patients do not communicate to their health care providers about the supplements they are currently taking. Dr Pankaj Naram also raises his own concern that not all supplements are of the same quality, and that people should be aware of important factors, such as if they are heavy-metal and bacteria free. Dr Naram says the study shows a significant increase in people taking additional vitamins and supplements, just that they need to ask about the quality of the supplements, and then check with their health care provider to make sure there are no negative interaction effects with other medications they are on. If done right, Dr Naram has seen thousands of cases where the health care provider tells the patient that they can reduce their dose of medication, or perhaps says they have no need for it anymore.

The authors of the study say the results are a key reason that patients need to be knowledgeable about the drugs they take, both over-the-counter and otherwise. In addition, anyone who takes supplements needs to check with their doctor before adding prescription meds to their daily regimen.
