GREENWOOD, La., Aug. 3, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- During a recent Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) program gathering at Gators and Friends Alligator Park and Exotic Zoo, injured veterans and their family members experienced the wonders of Louisiana wildlife along with the camaraderie of socializing with their service brothers and sisters.
Guests enjoyed the opportunity to have a variety of rare encounters. They found out how it feels to hold an alligator in their hands, and the group was invited to interact with – and feed – a variety of exotic creatures, including kangaroos and zebras.
While at the park, wounded veterans and their families bonded with each other.
"I wanted to go to Gators and Friends with my stepkids because they've never been there before, and it was a chance to connect with other warriors," said Army veteran Larry Garner. "Everyone in my family loves animals, and there were definitely plenty to see."
Fun activities like this support the long-term recovery needs of warriors with a special type of therapy that reintroduces them and their families to unique bonds experienced during military service. These relationships act as a secure bedrock that paves the road to recovery.
"WWP events are important because it just helps to be able to get out with your family and other veterans and enjoy the small things in life," Larry said.
WWP staff spent part of the day sharing details about programs and services that can be beneficial to each warrior's individual recovery. Generous donors make it possible for wounded veterans to participate in these life-saving programs at no cost to them.
By providing assistance with educational and employment goals, and physical, mental, and emotional recovery, WWP assists wounded service members as they make the transition to civilian life. The programs support both immediate and long-term recovery and healing for those who have given so much during their service.
