MONTCLAIR, N.J., Oct. 2, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- PAINWeekEnd on October 27 at the Omni Charlotte, 132 E. Trade Street, in Charlotte, North Carolina, will be an educational and exciting program providing busy clinicians and allied healthcare practitioners with 6.0 hours of relevant, practical instruction in the management of chronic pain.

In late June, North Carolina governor Roy Cooper signed the HOPE (Heroin and Opioid Prevention and Enforcement) Act, described by lawmakers as 'part 2' of the previously enacted STOP (Strengthen Opioid Misuse Prevention) Act, and intended to address the diversion of prescription medications into the illegal drug trade by providing more tools to law enforcement. Concern has been expressed by various advocacy groups, however, that the law countenances an unwarranted degree of government overreach and misses the larger public health crisis represented by illicit heroin and fentanyl. At PAINWeekEnd Charlotte, senior PAINWeek faculty member Michael Schatman, PhD, CPE, DASPE, will take a fresh look at other alternatives in the pain management armamentarium, in his course Evidence Based Approaches to Chronic Pain Management: Time to Reconsider the Benefit of Technophilism? "Unimodal and interventional approaches such as medications, surgery, spinal cord stimulation, intrathecal opioid pumps, and various others are not necessarily the most effective ways to treat chronic pain," Dr. Schatman observed. "In this course, I hope to impress on participants the potential benefits of engaging physiatrists—who are pain specialists with capacities to treat the biopsychosocial complexities of chronic pain conditions." Dr. Schatman will also be presenting Reefer Madness Revisited.

Other course topics to be offered at PAINWeekEnd Charlotte include Get Your Specimens in Order: The Importance of Individualized Test Orders and Timely Test Utilization; A Comedy of Errors: Methadone and Buprenorphine; Embrace Changes and Mitigate Legal Risks Associated with Opioid Prescribing and the Issue of Overdose: An Updated Blueprint for the Frontline Pain Practitioner and Medical Directors; and Trainwreck: Addressing Complex Pharmacotherapy With the Inherited Pain Patient.

Commercially supported activities—addressing a range of product, disease state, and medical information topics—will also be presented.

For more information about this or other regional conferences, and to register for $129, go to the PAINWeekEnd website. BONUS: PAINWeekEnd registrants may register for the 2019 PAINWeek National Conference, September 3-7, in Las Vegas, for $200 off the regular online published price.
