The Tour provides FREE full-body skin cancer screenings, samples of the latest AVEENO® sun protection products and educational materials to raise awareness of this preventable disease.  A 38-foot customized RV will travel more than 17,000 miles - to 80+ cities - driving home the message of skin cancer prevention throughout hometowns across the nation.

In 2010, more than 114,900 new cases of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, were diagnosed in the US, and despite advances in skin cancer treatment, the disease still claimed one victim every sixty-two minutes.  This staggering statistic can be dramatically reduced through education on sun protection, behavior modification and early detection(1).  Since 2008, the Road to Healthy Skin Tour has enlisted the help of local dermatologists who donated their time to provide 10,500 free screenings, detecting 7,100+ suspicious findings and 214 possible melanomas.  

The Tour provides a comfortable, mobile examining room for private screenings completely free of charge.  According to the Census Bureau, more than 50 million people were uninsured in 2010, which means almost one in six U.S. residents did not have adequate medical care.

According to a recent study published by the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, patients reported that denial was the most frequent reason for waiting to see a doctor about a suspicious lesion - accounting for 71 percent of all melanoma cases. Specifically, 36 percent "thought it would go away" and 24 percent "thought it wasn't important."  Dermatologist, Dr. Jeanine Downie notes, "There are other reasons why people are uncomfortable visiting a dermatologist such as negative body image.  Don't let denial or other excuses keep you from getting screened. I urge all of my patients to make an appointment immediately should they find a suspicious mark on their skin.
