Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism Honors New England's Top 40 Autism Organizations Serving Families

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Dec. 5, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The largest gathering of autism organizations in New England will convene at The Verve Crowne Plaza Hotel in Natick, MA on Friday, December 9th from 8:30am to 12pm for the 3rd Annual Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism Partner Summit. The Flutie Foundation will announce 40 grant recipients to receive close to $400,000 in funding to further programs and services that are supporting families affected by autism. It is estimated that over 24,000 people will be directly impacted by this funding.

"The Foundation grants support family-focused programs in three key areas that include promoting active lifestyles, improving access to services, and enhancing the independence of adults with autism."

Funding supports non-profit organizations in Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Southern California, Central Florida and parts of Canada. Since 1998, the Foundation has distributed over $14 million of support for families affected by autism. 

The summit will include educational speakers and workshops. Speakers include Christa Delcamp of WHDH-TV Channel 7 in Boston, who will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the Summit and announce the grant recipients. 

The Keynote Speaker will be Eve Megargel (of Weston, MA), an author, educator, filmmaker, and pioneer in advocating that all individuals on the autism spectrum are independent communicators who are capable of self-expression and social relationships. Her book, Learning to Kiss, is a memoir of her son Billy's struggle to express his life in the midst of autism and chronic pain.

Joining Eve Megargel will be three model organizations who will share how funding from the Foundation benefits local families. They include:

The Sports Museum of New EnglandCreators of Boston vs. Bullies, The Sports Museum of New England has tailored the program for kids on the autism spectrum to provide guidance and options to combat bullies.  Using Boston sports figures, this educational program has been delivered throughout the Greater Boston Area to help stop bullying in schools and in local communities.

University of Massachusetts Foundation – Camp ShriverCamp Shriver is a fully inclusive summer sports camp with 50% of participants having intellectual and developmental disabilities. Held each summer in Boston, Camp Shriver is provided at no cost to low income families in the Boston area for children ages 8-12 and include meals and transportation.

Friends of The New York Transit MuseumCreators of Travel Training 101, Friends of the New York Transit Museum provides autistic teens and young adults with a hands-on experience to travel New York City's transit system safely.

Immediately following the presentation, two workshops will be held: Grantwriting 201 & Beyond and Brand Management. Jack Peters and Liz Salmon from Peters Development Services will instruct participants on identifying, researching and preparing successful grant applications. The second workshop will be conducted by Denise Kaigler of MDK Brand Management. Denise will lead instruction on how to develop an authentic, consistent, and sustainable brand to achieve your business objectives.
