"We started Autism Activity Day events in 2016 as a way for the community, friends, and families to get together and enjoy a free day of fun activities, learning stations, and opportunities to meet new faces and socialize," said Jacob Boven, director of marketing at Centria Healthcare, which provides applied behavioral analysis therapy for children with autism along with support services for families living with autism. "The events became so popular that we decided to hold them in different cities across the country every few months, where Centria Autism provides services."

Orange County has one of the highest rates of children with autism in California. During the summer, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released a report showing an increased prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the United States, with 1 in 59 children in the U.S. are on the autism spectrum, a 1,000 percent increase in the past 40 years.

About 19 percent of all Orange County children, ages three to 22 years old, in special education, have been diagnosed with autism, a dramatic increase from 2000 when just under 3 percent were considered autistic.

Autism is complicated and parents of children with autism are growing frustrated in trying to navigate a complex system of insurance while finding the right mix of services for applied behavior analysis (ABA), speech and occupational therapy (OT) for their child.

"We want to make sure parents are aware and helping to identify and seek treatment for children with ASD in a timely manner," said Boven. "That is one of the many reasons why we host autism activity days across the country." Centria Autism focuses on finding available solutions and the right therapies to ensure all children with ASD receive comprehensive behavioral therapy to improve their lives, reduce the need for special education and supports, and increase their capacity for independent living later in life and on their terms.

Centria has organized similar events in Michigan, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon and Texas, in addition to Sensory-Friendly Santa, Sensory-Friendly Easter Bunny, and Autism-Friendly Movies. For more information and to find the next event close to you, visit centriaautism.com.
