Most pet owners will have to face the question of what to do with their pets when traveling, or any type of event or emergency comes up that temporarily disables them from caring for their dog, cat, or any other animal. Fortunately, there are plenty of professional kennels that can board and care for pets when owners need assistance. However, boarding your pets can be difficult due to separation anxiety and/or improper care. It is important to make sure your pet is going to be cared for competently, and to do whatever you can to make them as comfortable as possible.

The first step of ensuring your pet's safety and security is to do your homework when choosing a boarding kennel. Take the time to ask trusted friends and family for references, and visit more than one kennel until you find one you are comfortable with. The kennel should be clean and the staff should be caring and considerate.

Once you choose the right kennel, there are a few more extra steps you can take to really make sure your pet will be as comfortable and happy as possible while you are away.

Bring your own pet food

As a pet owner, you are probably aware that your pet's stomach is sensitive. Therefore, it will be beneficial to provide your own pet food when boarding your dog, cat, or any other type of pet. The possibility of illness is much higher if your pet is sensitive and exposed to different types of food. Sticking with their usual type of food will not only prevent them from getting sick, but it will give them a feeling of familiarity and comfortability while staying in a kennel.

Bring your pets bedding

Just like at home, your pet will most likely be sleeping a majority of the time during their stay at the kennel. To make your pet more comfortable, leave them with the bedding they sleep on at home. If they are scared, nervous, or missing home, sleeping on their own bed will relieve loads of stress for your pet.

Leave them with their favorite toy

Pets usually have a favorite or special toy at home, especially dogs. If you are concerned about your pet's stress and separation anxiety, leave them with that special toy. If you have a particularly clingy pet, leave a t-shirt that smells like you that they can have while you are away.

Boarding your pet can be stressful not only for your pet, but also for you. Leaving them with familiar food, toys, and bedding can help ensure that your pet is safe, comfortable, and happy. A happy pet makes for a happy pet owner.
