New Full-Day Course Track on Friday, September 7, Explores the Latest Evidence on the Management of Leading Musculoskeletal Pain Conditions

MONTCLAIR, N.J., August 1, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The American Pain Society will return to the 2018 PAINWeek National Conference with an all-new course track exploring the latest evidence addressing measurement, mechanisms, and management of musculoskeletal (MSK) pain conditions. Despite improved understanding of the mechanisms of MSK, patient and provider satisfaction with treatment has not always kept pace, particularly with respect to fibromyalgia syndrome (FM) and chronic widespread pain. In Here a Pain, There a Pain, Everywhere a Pain Pain, the American Pain Society will consider the latest evidence on this condition which afflicts up to 8% of the general population, mostly women. Course presenter Roland Staud, MD, PhD, said, "I look forward to providing course participants with a summary of findings and recommendations for a comprehensive approach to the assessment and treatment of FM focusing on pain but also integrating fatigue, sleep abnormalities, and mood."

Also in the course track on Friday, Burel Goodin, PhD, will present Oh My Aching Back: Assessment and Management of Low Back Pain, addressing therapeutic strategies that healthcare providers can utilize to help minimize potentially stigmatizing responses to their patients' condition, that often presents with is no clear association between pain and identifiable pathology of the spine or associated tissues. Dr. Goodin observed, "Previous research has shown that laypersons and providers alike are less inclined to help, feel less sympathy, dislike patients more, suspect deception, and attribute lower pain severity to patients whose pain does not have an objective basis in tissue pathology." Rounding out the American Pain Society course track will be The Knee Bone's Connected to the... Peripheral and Central Mechanisms in Knee Osteoarthritis, an examination of this leading cause of pain and disability in older adults, led by Roger Fillingim, PhD, and Exercise Your Demons: The Benefits of Exercise as a Treatment for Musculoskeletal Pain, presented by Marie Hoeger Bement, PT, PhD.
