Benefits of Prenatal Exercise

The benefits of prenatal exercise are immense for the expectant woman during pregnancy and childbirth. The growing fetus is also amply benefited if the mother is physically fit.

Benefit of exercise for pregnant women:

• 40% reduced risk of miscarriage
• Reduction in pregnancy associated discomfort
• Promotes good sleep
• Enhanced energy levels
• Reduces risks of premature labor
• Reduces risks of gestational diabetes and pregnancy-induced hypertension
• Reduces lower back pain
• Reduced loss of bone density during lactation
• Improved bowel movement
• Improved flexibility of joints and muscles

Benefit of exercise during labor

• Consistent exercise during pregnancy increases the level of endorphins in the woman’s body. During labor, there is a gush of endorphins in the woman’s body to help her deal with the pain of uterine contractions.

• Research shows that those women, who exercised consistently during pregnancy, released double or treble the quantity of endorphins during labor. Many of them did not need epidurals as compared to women who did not exercise.

• Further, incidences of cesarean sections in exercising women were found to be much less as compared to those who were sedentary during their pregnancy.

Benefit of exercise on the fetus

The benefits of exercise during pregnancy on the growing fetus are loaded.

• Consistent exercise enhances the growth of the placenta; it was observed that the placenta of women who exercised showed at least 15% more blood vessels at full term.

• Pregnant women into regular forms of fitness portrayed reduced levels of stress hormones. The presence of elevated levels of stress hormones can cause reduction in the amount of oxygen reaching the baby, which is detrimental to the baby during childbirth. Therefore, it can be said that exercising mothers produce healthier babies.

• Children born to mothers who had exercised during their pregnancy scored much higher in intelligence tests. A research on mice showed that exercising during pregnancy promoted the growth of neurons in the progeny, showing an increase in the size of the brain.
