E-cigarettes have become popular in Minnesota and around the country, but the many unknowns about their health effects, their relationship to youth smoking and other issues have raised concerns among health organizations.

FDA's proposed regulations are a good first step to creating consistency and oversight at the federal level around this new and addictive product. They do not, however, address upholding a standard of clean indoor air that Minnesotans expect and support.
Local governments across our state have shown great leadership by including e-cigarettes in their clean indoor air laws and making it harder for children to purchase and use these new products. Today's announcement from the FDA should not preclude Minnesota lawmakers from taking action. Legislators should continue to push for statewide legislation to protect our clean indoor air and keep e-cigarettes out of kids' hands.
