WALNUT CREEK, Calif., Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Seven-time PGA TOUR winner Steve Stricker has recently designated a check in the amount of $10,000 to the National Fragile X Foundation. This contribution is a portion of the charitable proceeds generated from The Presidents Cup 2009 at Harding Park Golf Course in San Francisco, California, in which Stricker participated as a member of the victorious U.S. Team for the third time in his career.
The Presidents Cup is a unique golf event in that there is no purse or prize money. Players are not personally paid for their participation, but each competitor, captain and captain's assistant is allowed to allocate funds to chosen charitable causes. Steve chose the National Fragile X Foundation, a nonprofit organization celebrating twenty-five years of serving the Fragile community of families and professionals. Fragile X is a family of associated genetic disorders impacting over one million Americans. In children it can result in significant intellectual disability including autism. In older men who are carriers it can result in a serious neurological condition known as FXTAS and in female carriers it can cause serious reproductive problems including early menopause.
Steve Stricker has previously helped the National Fragile X Foundation by appearing at golf events organized by the NFXF's affiliated Southern Wisconsin Fragile X Resource Group.
More than $4.2 million was distributed to charitable causes from The Presidents Cup 2009, a record-tying amount for this prestigious competition and part of the nearly $22 million raised since the inception of event in 1994.
About Steve Stricker in 2009: Steve Stricker chipped in for birdie on the par-4 17th hole in regulation play and then made a 3-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole to win the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. He beat third-round leader Tim Clark and Steve Marino in the playoff for his fifth career PGA TOUR title, moving him to second place in the FedExCup standings. After breaking his career-low round with a 9-under 61 in the second round of the John Deere Classic, he holed a 98-yard pitch shot for an eagle-two in the final round to claim a three-stroke win over Zach Johnson, Brett Quigley and Brandt Snedeker. With the win, he moved into second place in the FedExCup standings.
