Lamenting that DNA technology and profiling is yet to make a rapid pace in India he said in the United States over a hundred people on death row have been let off on the basis of DNA tests. To do real justice extensive use of DNA test is necessary and he was happy that more and more laboratories are now equipped with DNA testing facilities in the country.
Dr.Raghavan said India like the world is today rocked by terrorism and violent crimes. The entire country is becoming more and more unsafe for women and children. What is causing alarm is involvement of women in some of the terrorism related cases. Stressing the need for highest standards of professionalism and ethics in forensic medicine he said “never buckle down under illegal pressures from any quarters”. He described the ongoing Sunanda Pushkar case as a classic example of a complex modern crime in high places.
Forensic experts from all over the country including graduate and post graduate students in Forensic Medicine participated in the three day conference. Mr.T.K.Rajendran, ADGP, Tamilnadu, Dr.S.P. Thyagarajan, Dean Research, Dr. JSN Murthy, Vice Chancellor, Dr.K.V.Somasundaram, Dean of Faculties, Dr.S.D.Nanandkar, President, IAFM and Dr.P.Sampath Kumar, Organising Secretary and HOD, Forensic Medicine, SRU were among those who participated in the event.
