Bart Harmon, MD, MPH, a national leader in military healthcare and healthinformation systems, is Harris Corporation's chief medical officer (CMO) forHealthcare Solutions. Dr. Harmon was previously Chief Medical InformationOfficer and Director of Information Management for the Military Health System(MHS) of the US Department of Defense (DoD). In that role, he served on thestaff of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, led DoD-wideinitiatives on electronic health records and chaired the work group thatdefined information sharing requirements for the DoD and the Veterans HealthAdministration. He has previously reported on this work in testimony to aPresidential Task Force and Congressional Committee.

Dr. Harmon recently served on the work group to standardize healthinformation technology terms for the Office of the National Coordinator forHealth Information Technology and on the transition work group for thesuccessor organization to the American Health Information Community. Hepreviously served on the Electronic Health Records Work Group and was on theBoard of the Health Information Technology Standards Panel. Both groupsreported to the American Health Information Community (AHIC) which was chairedby the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Dr. Harmon chaired the NATO Medical Communication and Information SystemsExpert Panel and served as the DoD lead for the international health standardsorganization, Health Level Seven (HL7). He was deployed to Iraq and Kuwait in2003 to provide training on the DoD Electronic Health Record system.

He received his medical degree from the University of Washington, a Masterof Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health and completed aResearch Fellowship in Medical Informatics at Massachusetts General Hospital.Harmon is also a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and the General Staffcourse. He retired from the U.S. Army in 2007 at the rank of Colonel.
