SACRAMENTO, Calif., Oct. 30 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- It's not every day pirates and gypsies visit a nursing home. Nurse administrators don't often see miniature witches and 3-foot-tall bumblebees, and little goblins rarely get to meet 90-year-old soldiers or 80-year-young ballerinas! But at more than 150 nursing homes in California this Halloween, it's going to be a different story.

"Our nursing homes are a part of the community, and we want as much interaction with our neighbors as possible," said Betsy Hite, Director of Public Affairs for the California Association of Health Facilities (CAHF), which is coordinating the statewide event. "So we're inviting children to visit their participating neighborhood nursing home between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Halloween to trick or treat, play games, show off their costumes, and just generally have fun." (A list of participating nursing homes in the Sacramento region is attached.)

The statewide Halloween event began as an idea of the Association to which many of the state's nursing homes belong. "We want our nursing homes to be as comfortable and home-like as possible, and so many of the elderly in our care have such fond memories of seeing the little ones come trick or treating in our homes," said Rebecca Turner, Chair of the Association's Public Advocacy Committee. "With the neighborhood children coming by, it gives our elder citizens the opportunity to share in the Halloween fun."

Children between the ages of 5 and 12, along with their parents, are invited to trick or treat at participating facilities from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on October 31st. There will be treats, games, costume prizes and other fun activities. For more information call a nursing home on the attached list. "This is such a fun time for little kids," Turner said. "And when these children get to interact in a fun, positive way with our elderly folks, everyone smiles."
