MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 3 Many of us have a "BFF" (Best Friend Forever), but people with diabetes or pre-diabetes need a BFF who understands the importance of maintaining a healthy diabetic lifestyle -- a "DFF" (Diabetes Friend Forever). To honor these unsung heroes, Dreamfields Pasta is launching a first-of-its-kind contest to pay tribute to the special people who help make living with diabetes a manageable experience.

Dreamfields is calling on all Americans with diabetes, or those who know someone with diabetes, to nominate the DFFs in their lives and give them the recognition they deserve. DFFs can be friends, family members, caregivers or healthcare professionals like dietitians, diabetes educators, doctors, nurses and pharmacists.

"I know firsthand how important a DFF can be," said Sherri Shepherd, comedienne, actress, author, Emmy Award-wining co-host of the ABC-TV show "The View," and national spokesperson for the Dreamfields DFF program. "Since I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2007, I've been fortunate to have two DFFs in my life - my son Jeffrey and my trainer, 'The Evil One.' They've inspired me to lose 40 pounds and I'm keeping the weight off and controlling my blood sugar with exercise and diabetes-friendly foods like Dreamfields pasta."

Nominating that special someone is easy. Simply visit www.diabetesfriendsforever.com

and click on submit a story. Nineteen DFFs and their nominators will be awarded cash prizes ranging from $2,000 to $5,000 each and/or a free case of Dreamfields pasta.

"Statistics indicate that a new case of diabetes is diagnosed every 20 seconds in America. It's important that with every new - and existing - diagnosis, we recognize the network of supporters who counsel, cajole and cheer for this growing community," said Mike Crowley, president of Dreamfields. "Our customers, especially those with diabetes, enjoy pasta and rely on Dreamfields to help them manage their post-meal blood sugar without giving up foods they love."

Shepherd agrees. Giving up carbs, especially her favorite - pesto pasta - was a challenge. But after finding a great-tasting, low digestible carb product like Dreamfields, weight and blood sugar management is enjoyable. "Dreamfields is my DFF in the pantry!" said Shepherd. Sherri's go-to Dreamfields recipe, "Sherri's Pesto Pasta" is easy to prepare and share with her son, Jeffrey.

Made from durum wheat semolina, Dreamfields tastes like traditional pasta, but contains twice the fiber, only 5 grams of digestible carbohydrates and has a 65-percent lower glycemic index. It also contains inulin; a 100 percent natural prebiotic fiber which helps promote healthy digestion. Look for the black Dreamfields box in the pasta aisle at your local supermarket, or ask your grocer if you can't find it. Additionally, Dreamfields is available for purchase online via several prominent vendors. Approximate retail value for a 13.25 ounce box is $2.49.
