WASHINGTON, Oct. 17 Dr. Said Hakki, president of the IraqiRed Crescent Organization (IRCO), is in Washington, DC, October 17-19 andavailable for interviews to discuss the organization's mission and fundraisinggoals.

The Iraqi Red Crescent Organization is a Red Cross affiliated, non-sectarian humanitarian and health organization providing relief to refuges andIDPs and is the only group that can deliver effective services throughout thewhole of Iraq. The organization works with Iraqi government agencies andministries to deliver food and medical supplies to areas of conflict insideIraq.

Dr. Said Hakki Bio Information

Dr. Said Hakki is a citizen of both the United States and Iraq. He servedas a senior adviser on urology and fertility within the Ministry of Health butfled with his family to the United States in 1986. Dr. Hakki maintained arespected medical practice at the Bay Pines VA Medical Center in Florida untilhe volunteered to return to Baghdad in 2002 to advise the interim government'sMinistry of Health.

Following his service to the Iraq Ministry of Health Dr. Hakki becamepresident of the Iraqi Red Crescent Organization. In that capacity he has ledthe IRCO in its work with Iraqi government agencies and ministries to deliverfood and medical supplies to areas of conflict inside Iraq. The Iraqigovernment also relies on the IRCO to help coordinate the relief of and accessto medical care by externally displaced people and to coordinate this workwith the host Red Crescent Organizations and the IFRC.

At a time when all other nationally and internationally accountableorganizations operate Iraqi relief efforts remotely from other countries, theIraqi Red Crescent Organization has 100,000 volunteers and employees, and morethan 300 offices throughout Iraq, including Kurdistan. The group is fundedpartially by the Iraqi government, but faces needs that far exceed what theIraqi government alone can provide. In support, the International Committeeof the Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and RedCrescent Societies have appealed to international donors to support theestimated 2 million Iraqi refugees and 1.7 million internally displacedpersons.
