Deloitte Chairman of the Board Sharon L. Allen Named Chairman of the American Friends of the Phelophepa Train

NEW YORK, Nov. 16 Sharon L. Allen, Chairman of the Board,Deloitte & Touche USA LLP, has been named Chairman of the Board of theAmerican Friends of the Phelophepa Train (AFPT).

"It's an honor, on behalf of Deloitte, to support the critical work of theAFPT Board, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Ms. Leah Tutu in bringing awareness tothe healthcare needs of the people of South Africa to the United States," saidAllen.

Allen, named Chairman of the Board of Deloitte in 2003 and re-electedChairman in 2007, serves on the President's Export Council and is a member ofthe Women's Leadership Board of the JFK School of Government at HarvardUniversity. Named one of Forbes' Magazines "Most Powerful Women in the World"for the past two years, she also serves on the national board of the YMCA, theAutry National Center of Los Angeles and the United Way of Greater LosAngeles.

Allen replaces James E. Copeland, Jr., former CEO of Deloitte and DeloitteTouche Tohmatsu, who has served as the Chairman of the AFPT organization forthe past four years.

Founded in 1994, the Phelophepa (pronounced PAY-low-PEP-PA) Train is amobile medical unit that annually travels through 36 South African rural areasfive days a week providing medical, dental and eye care, health education,psychological counseling and training programs on HIV/AIDS to disadvantagedpeople in these areas. In rural provinces of South Africa, there is one doctorfor every 5,000 people.

The Phelophepa represents social healing and reconciliation for what was aracially torn nation. Partly funded by the Transnet Foundation of SouthAfrica, the program has been so successful that the South African Governmentwill be launching a second train, Phelophepa II, in 2008.

For the past six years the American Friends of the Phelophepa Train havepresented a gala dinner to celebrate and support the Train's travelsthroughout South Africa. US-based global business and social leaders, whoshare the goals and have made significant contributions, are recognized, notonly for support of the cause but also for their efforts to improve theeconomic conditions in South Africa and the lives of its people.
