Lyme disease is a common infection brought about by a tick bite. Although it is curable if treated quickly and accurately, the preliminary signs often go unnoticed, causing long-term health issues that may be lifelong. To combat this disease, it's important to be educated on what the warning signs consist of. Alternative EarthCare reveals the four most common Lyme disease symptoms to watch for:

1. Bulls-eye rash. Although it starts as a small red patch at the site of infection, the rash expands over the following days and clears in the center, resembling a bulls-eye target. Although the rash is typically neither itchy nor painful, it is the most commonly recognized early warning symptom of the disease and may expand as large as 12 inches in diameter.

2. Flu-like symptoms. Following an infected tick bite, you may experience symptoms that resemble the flu. This should be a red flag, especially since tick bites are most common in warmer months. Symptoms include fever, chills, fatigue, body aches, and swollen lymph nodes.

3. Joint pain. If left untreated, the next progression of Lyme disease presents itself as joint pain. The disease most commonly induces swelling and pain in the knees, but can affect all joints, the neck, and even the spine as well.

4. Neurological problems. Neurological problems may also result from inflammation of the membrane surrounding the brain (also known as meningitis), which is caused by the spreading of infection. This inflammation may cause temporary facial paralysis, nerve pain or numbness/tingling, impaired muscle movement, and short-term memory loss.

In order to avoid these aforementioned health issues, it is important to implement effective tick control strategies on your lawn and in surrounding areas of tall grass. Considering consulting with a professional pest control company to discuss the different options you have available to you as a home or business owner.

Serving both Suffolk and Nassau County, including the East End and the Hamptons, Alternative EarthCare offers a variety of organic, non-toxic lawn care services for your home or business.
