GLENVIEW, Ill., Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Academy of Pain Medicine's (AAPM) 2009 Annual Meeting - its 25th Anniversary - will take place in Hawaii this week with over 200 scientific posters, presentations and sessions. More than 750 physicians and other healthcare providers who research pain, or treat patients with pain, will attend.

"Over the last 25 years there has been an unprecedented evolution of pain medicine, science, and practice. Our scientists are discovering the mechanisms that cause injuries and diseases which damage the spinal cord and brain so that in many cases chronic pain becomes a progressive disease, not just a symptom," said incoming AAPM President and Editor-in-Chief of Pain Medicine, Rollin M. Gallagher, MD MPH. "We have also seen an exponential increase in interventions for back pain, migraines, and traumatic injury patients. And there has been incredible progress in developing several different classes of medicines that work at many levels of the body, spinal cord, and brain to effectively treat pain, including medications with decreased abuse potential."

At this year's meeting, attendees will have access to latest research on the most innovative treatments in a multitude of therapeutic areas, as well as attend sessions to learn more about war and pain, and about advancements in pain management in Pacific Rim countries such as Australia and China.
"With the progress made in global pain medicine research and care, it is the perfect time to converge all approaches to help achieve the best outcomes for patients," Gallagher concluded.
