Former citizens of Love Canal issue the report Love Canal 30th Anniversary Report: NYS Department of Health's Final Whitewash.



Speaking for several of her peers, Retton, now in her thirties, will address concerns the children of Love Canal hold to this day. Renee lost her baby sister at Love Canal and, for the first time in public, will speak about her memories of Love Canal.



Following the press conference, additional residents of the former community will join press conference participants as Lois Gibbs leads a walking tour.



On This Eve of Love Canal History

August 2, 1978 - The New York State Commissioner of Health declared a State of Emergency at Love Canal and ordered the 99th Street School to be closed and a clean up plan be undertaken immediately to address the leaking site containing over 20,000 tons of toxic waste. He also recommended that pregnant women and children under the age of two who lived in the area immediately surrounding the Love Canal landfill should move.
