Liver cancer is an abnormal growth of cells, in the liver. Liver cancer can be classified into two major categories, primary and secondary liver cancer. Primary liver cancer originates from the cells present in the liver and is more common among middle-aged men and aged individuals (above 60 years of age). Secondary liver cancer originates in some other region of the body such as the colon, stomach, lung or breast and spreads to the liver. Presence of liver cancer in family members, cirrhosis of the liver, alcohol consumption, hepatitis and exposure to cancer causing chemicals are associated with increased risk of developing liver cancer. The emergence of new treatment modalities such as Chemoembolisation and Radio Frequency Ablation continue to offer hope in liver cancer treatment.
