Symptoms of Giardiasis

Ninety percent people with giardiasis complain of diarrhea.

Giardiasis manifests itself in several ways:

Some people can be carriers of the disease and have no symptoms at all. However, the carriers pass cysts in their stool and can spread the disease to others.

Some people may develop acute phase of the disease which continues at least for 5 to 7 days.

In yet other patients, the infection may progress to a chronic disease in which the symptoms appear 1 to 3 weeks after ingestion of the protozoan parasite.

Symptoms of acute giardiasis include-

  • Diarrhea
  • Mal-absorption of fat
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Nausea
  • Weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Stool that is voluminous, foul smelling and greasy in appearance
  • No mucus or blood is present in the feces

Symptoms of chronic giardiasis include-

  • Severe diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain which worsens after eating
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Headache
  • Malnutrition
  • Weight loss
