Diagnosis of Vitiligo

The diagnosis of Vitiligo is made based on physical examination, medical history, and laboratory tests. The following points in the medical history of the patient are relevant:

  • A history of Vitiligo or an autoimmune disease in the family
  • A history of sun sensitivity or other skin conditions
  • A rash, sunburn or other skin trauma within two to three months of the start of pigment loss
  • Early graying of the hair (before age 35)
  • Stress or physical illness

Skin conditions such as dermatitis or psoriasis should be ruled out.

Examination of the eyes may be required in selected cases to check for inflammatory conditions like uveitis.
