Tooth Decay

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Which doctor should I consult for tooth decay?

You must consult a dentist.

2. How can I prevent tooth decay?

Dental caries can be prevented only by maintaining a good oral hygiene.
  • Brush at least twice a day and floss regularly and rinse mouth after eating food.
  • Visit your dentist at least once a year for your regular dental check up.
  • Fluoride is often recommended to protect against dental caries. Topical fluoride is also recommended to protect the surface of the teeth. This includes toothpaste or mouthwash that contains fluoride.
3. Does sugar cause tooth decay?

Tooth decay is the result of many factors. Heredity, the make-up and flow of saliva, sugars and other carbohydrates such as starchy foods play a part in the decaying of the tooth. Bacteria on the teeth (dental plaque) feed on carbohydrates and make acids. These acids then break down the tooth to form a cavity. Frequent snacking, especially with the ones that contain carbohydrates, tends to stick to the teeth, and increase the chances of decay.
