Symptoms and Signs of Osteosarcoma

Osteosarcomas can be discovered as incidental findings or present with pain, swelling or even fractures. The most commonly affected area is around the knee joint.

Osteosarcomas may not present with any symptoms and may be discovered during testing or examination of some other conditions. Some of the symptoms and signs of osteosarcoma are listed below-

  • Non-mechanical pain and/or night pain
  • Swelling in the affected area. The overlying skin may be stretched, shiny and warmer due to the rapidly growing tumour.
  • A fracture in the affected bone.
Symptoms and Signs of Osteosarcoma: Fracture in the Affected Bone

The most common areas affected are-

  • 50% of tumours arise around the knee
  • 15% osteosarcomas arise around the hip joint
  • 10% arise in the shoulder
  • 8% of the osteosarcomas are seen in the jaw bone.
  • Men are more commonly affected than women. (1.6:1)
