Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) was first cultivated in Mexico and later travelled to Europe. The Italians called it pomi d'oro (golden apple) and the French pomme d'amour (love apple) giving it special place in their cuisines. It then came to Asia and captured the minds and cuisines of all. No gravy is complete without the addition of this vegetable-fruit. It has carved a niche for itself in all cuisines.
