Parasomnias

Classification of Sleep Disorders - Parasomnias

Parasomnia meaning "around sleep" are a group of undesirable, episodic events that usually occur during sleep, or are exaggerated by sleep. Parasomnia is associated with conditions such as sleep walking, sleep paralysis, night terrors, bedwetting.

Even though parasomnias occur during different stages of sleep and at different times during the night, the patient is partially awake either before, during, or after the event.

Most parasomnias often result from stress and may be associated with depression although, biological reasons cannot be ruled out. This condition is seen more in children than adults.
