Treatment of Reye’s Syndrome

Treatment of Reye's Syndrome

Reye's syndrome is a life-threatening emergency and requires intensive management. No specific treatment exists. Children should be managed in an intensive-care unit.

Establish and maintain the patient's airway, breathing, and circulation. Correct the glucose level if low. Fluids may be infused to provide electrolytes and glucose. Drugs like ondansetron may be used to decrease vomiting. Treat seizures with phenytoin. In advanced stages, a ventilator may be used to assist with breathing. Surgical methods like a drainage procedure or decompression craniotomy may be summoned to reduce pressure in the brain. Sodium phenylacetate / sodium benzoate is approved for treating hyperammonemia associated with Reye's syndrome.
