Polycystic ovaries are present in 3-7% of women worldwide

Most studies note that polycystic ovaries are present in 3-7% of women worldwide.

In India it is estimated that the incidence is higher and probably three times more than that found in the western world.

Although most patients present in their 20s or 30s, polycystic ovarian disease can affect females of any age, from menarche to menopause.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) accounts for –

  • 90% of women with infrequent periods (or oligomenorrhea),
  • 30% of women with absence of periods (or amenorrhea)
  • Over 70% of women with anovulation – no production of eggs during periods.
