Complications of Pneumoconiosis

Complications of Pneumoconiosis include -

Silicosis

► Tuberculosis in almost 25% patients

► Pulmonary massive fibrosis

► Autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and scleroderma

► Lung cancer

► Death especially in acute and accelerated silicosis

Coal worker’s pneumoconiosis

► Silicosis may also occur in patients with coal worker’s pneumoconiosis.

► Pulmonary massive fibrosis

► Digestive system cancers. However, it does not increase the incidence of lung cancer

Asbestosis

► Pulmonary massive fibrosis

► Cancer of the lung and the pleura called mesothelioma may occur. It takes at least 20 years from the development of asbestosis to the development of cancer. Smoking multiplies the risk of lung cancer in asbestosis.

► Cancer of the peritoneum (tissue covering the digestive system), kidney, digestive system, throat and blood
