Glossary

Cyst: A sac or capsule filled with fluid.

Neoplastic: A new growth of tissue. Can be benign or cancerous.

Follicle: A sac, embedded in the ovary, that encloses an ovum.

Theca-lutein Cyst: Benign enlargement of a follicle occurring under certain conditions e.g. multiple pregnancies, elevated human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) levels.

Gestational Trophoblastic Disease: A rare cancer in women of child-bearing age in which cancer cells grow in the tissues that are formed in the uterus after conception. Also called gestational trophoblastic tumor, gestational trophoblastic neoplasia, molar pregnancy, or choriocarcinoma.

Endometriosis: A benign condition in which tissue that looks like endometrial tissue grows in abnormal places in the abdomen.

Laparoscopy: Examination of the peritoneum through a lighted instrument.

Hysterectomy: Surgical removal of uterus.

Salpingo-oophorectomy: Surgical removal of the tube and ovary.

Cystectomy: Surgical removal of a cyst.
