Nose Bleed/Epistaxis FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Nosebleed

1. Which doctor should I consult for nosebleed?

A General Physician can be consulted.

2. When should I consult a doctor for nosebleed?

You must consult the doctor if -
  • The bleeding does not stop after 20 minutes.
  • Bleeding occurs after a head injury.
  • The nose is broken (after a blow or injury)

You must also consult your doctor if you or your child has repeated nosebleeds that are not associated with a cold or other minor irritation.

3. My son has the habit of nose picking in the night, what should I do to prevent it?

Nocturnal nose picking can be prevented by placing cushioned gloves on the hands of the sleeping child so that his hands do not fit in his nose.

4. Why does the nose bleed easily?

The lining of the nose is made up of delicate skin which has a rich blood supply. Hence even a minor cut or scratch tends to bleed heavily.

5. What is the prognosis of nosebleed?

Nosebleeds are rarely life threatening. Sometimes blood loss may be underestimated, especially in posterior nosebleeds. Recurrent nosebleeds may cause iron deficiency anemia.
