In children the symptoms of the mono occur within 10 days of exposure to the virus while in adults it can take nearly a month before the symptoms become visible.

Like other viral fever the common symptoms include:-

  • Fever, (102-104 degree F)
  • Fatigue, drowsiness, malaise
  • Sore throat, enlarged tonsils,
  • Rashes
  • Chills
  • Muscle aches and stiffness
  • Swollen glands in the throat region, armpit, groin
  • Nausea, stomach upset and vomiting
  • Enlarged liver and spleen
  • Swelling around the eyes, swollen eye lids
  • Weight loss

Less common symptoms include:-

  • Cough
  • Nose Bleed
  • Stiff neck
  • Chest pain
  • Breathlessness and palpitations
  • Light sensitivity
  • Mild jaundice
  • Hives

Complications, if any, are rare. One that is commonly observed is dehydration from lack of fluid intake. Breathing may become difficult due to the throat being affected. Sometimes the enlarged spleen might rupture leading to a life - threatening situation and even death.

Other complications include:-

  • Anemia
  • Hepatitis
  • Pericarditis
  • Myocarditis
