How is Leukocytosis Diagnosed?

Diagnosis of leukocytosis is based on the history of the patient, clinical examination and blood tests.

Diagnosis of leukocytosis is based on the following:

  • A carefully taken medical history can help in the diagnosis of leukocytosis. Information about allergies and other medical conditions should be sorted out. In addition, information about the daily schedule, if undergone any kind of physical or emotional stress also helps in diagnosis.
  • A complete physical check-up is necessary.
  • A complete blood count is done to check the concentration of WBCs in the blood.
  • Another blood test known as peripheral blood smear test is done to know the shape and form of WBCs. It also indicates which component of the WBCs is making a significant contribution to leukocytosis.

  • Bone marrow tests may be necessary to check for any disorders, which are causing leukocytosis. Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy is recommended to differentiate between malignant conditions like leukemia from benign conditions.
  • Additional tests are done to check for other possible infections or inflammation, which are most likely to cause leukocytosis.(2 Trusted Source
