How can Anemia be Treated?
The main treatment is directed towards eliminating the cause of anemia and might include:
- Iron, folic acid and vitamin B12 supplements- Oral supplementation with ferrous sulphate, ferrous fumarate or ferrous gluconate is recommended in mild to moderate cases of anemia. Parenteral iron is used in cases where oral iron supplementation has proved ineffective or when the anemia is severe.
- Blood transfusion may be required in severe cases of anemia.
- Administration of erythropoietin to stimulate the bone marrow to produce more RBCs.
