Treatment for Febrile Fits

When the child starts having fits

  • parents must remember not to panic.
  • He/She should not be restrained.
  • The head should be turned to the left side
  • Taken to the doctor when the spell passes.

The mainstay in the management of febrile seizures lies in bringing down the fever as quickly as possible. Drugs like Diazepam-a sedative to the brain, is given through the rectal route by a special tube or through the vein. Sometimes anti-epileptic drugs like Phenobarbitone is also given. Nursing care plays an important supportive role. Tepid sponging is also done to bring down the fever. The child is monitored and the parents are reassured, advised as to what to do in the future before the child is discharged.
