Symptoms & Signs of Diabetic Kidney Disease
Diabetic nephropathy does not show any signs or symptoms. It is, therefore, vital to have regular urine tests to detect kidney damage so that the condition can be controlled.
The first sign of kidney damage is the presence of small amounts of protein in the urine. As the disease progresses blood pressure, triglycerides and cholesterol levels increase.
With the decline in the kidney’s ability to function, the following symptoms such as:
- Fatigue
- Frothing of the urine
- Nausea and vomiting
- Poor appetite
- Swelling of the legs begin to develop
Swellings may be noticed in around the eyes (in the mornings) and various parts of the body. There is a weight gain from fluid buildup.
It is estimated that about 25 to 40 percent of patients with type-1 diabetes eventually develop diabetic nephropathy.
